What are air source heat pumps?

Have you heard the term ‘air source heat pump’ you know it is some kind of green technology, but you are asking yourself ‘what are air source heat pumps’? Well, we have the answer.

Basically what an air source heat pump does is absorbs heat from the air outside your home and releases it into your home using a similar technology to air-conditioners (vapour compression refrigeration  – if you want to get technical) but in the opposite direction – heating instead of cooling.

As well as this basic explanation we thought it might also be helpful if we answered some of the most common questions we get asked about this new technology…so here we go with a quick-fire round.

How warm does the weather have to be for it to work?

Not warm at all…an air source heat pump can extract heat from air as cold as -15 degrees Celsius 🥶

Can it heat my water too?

Yes, it sure can

Do I need to have a fancy central heating or underfloor heating system?

No, an air source heat pump can work with most central heating systems – radiators or underfloor heating

How loud is an air source heat pump?

Unless it is working very hard in cold temperatures it is about as loud as your fridge.

Where does an air source heat pump go?

The pump goes outside and you need to have enough space outside your property to accommodate it.

How big is an air source heat pump?

About two feet tall, one foot deep and two and a half feet wide. You also need to allow at least 30cm around the sides and rear and 1.5 metres in front of it.

If you have a specific question about air source heat pumps why not pop it into our Contact Form and we’ll get back to you with the answer. We’ll be writing another couple of blogs over the next couple of months about what an air source heat pump costs and how much it could save you on your energy bill, but if you want to find out the answer to these questions now…just get in touch and we’ll come out and give you a quote.
